7de Laan is a long running multi-cultural soap and is the brainchild of Danie Odendaal, who came upon the idea for this popular soapie nearly fifteen years ago when he was living in Melville. Every morning over coffee and breakfast in his favourite coffee shop, he watched people come and go and started creating his own imaginary suburb with a variety of characters: a stingy businessman who loves to gossip, the manager of his coffee shop who is a beloved mother figure, the cute and lively waitresses, an eccentric old man who talks in riddles, and of course a superbitch or two for good measure. Even though the series is primarily in Afrikaans, it has a following across the cultural and colour spectrum and English subtitles make it accessible to a very wide audience.
