Next on 5050 we celebrate Heritage Day in style
It’s Heritage Day and we’re celebrating in style!
Our first news story is about African Wild Dogs who are South Africa’s most endangered carnivores. In order to help protect them, a few were relocated, with the help from The Endangered Wildlife Trust, to a facility in Lapalala Wilderness. We check in to see how they are doing, and guess what? While they were in a holding boma, they gave birth to a litter of the most adorable pups!
HERITAGE DAY GAME DRIVE
Game Ranger Sakhile Sibiya from Tembe Elephant Park, takes us on a game drive with a difference. This story highlights indigenous heritage and how nature and the environment are one with traditional culture.
THE BIG, THE SHY AND THE UGLY
Thought we only had the Big 5? Think again! This week we meet the “Shy 5” and the “Ugly 5” with creatures ranging from aardwolves, bat-eared fox, warthogs, hyenas and everything in between.
ULWANDLE LUSHILE – MEETING THE TIDES
Over the past few months we’ve been showcasing films by some young environmental filmmakers who won grants to produce their films, from a competition called the N.E.W Pitch. This week’s film is sticking to the Heritage Day theme and includes an inspiring story by Tembisa Jordaan called “Ulwandle Lushile – Meeting the Tides” which is about the age-old tradition of women harvesting mussels from the shoreline.
The youth of South Africa have a lot to say when it comes to environmental issues! In the past few weeks we’ve been asking our younger viewers to send in cellphone clips of themselves telling us about their environmental causes and what they’re passionate about.
VeldFokus brings us a colourful arrangement of contributions that capture some of our country’s abundant wildlife. This week a leopard and porcupine have a standoff, a rare bat rests its wet wings and a tailless whip scorpion reveals itself.
Tune in this Monday at 7PM on SABC 2!
