SABC arrives at Durban awards show to pick up traditional music recognition

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture has scooped the South African Traditional Music Award (Satma) in the category Best Traditional and Cultural Department at a glamorous event held at Durban's ICC last night. Saba Mbixana from SABC's Umhlobo Wenene FM won for Best DJ in a Public broadcast station. The glitzy event - attended by hundreds of traditional music lovers and artists - was also graced by President Jacob Zuma's wives Ma-Khumalo and Ma-Ntuli and IFP leader Inkosi Mangosuthu Buthelezi. Paul Ferus took home the Best Traditional and Cultural Boeremusiek award Internationally renowned cultural artists, Ravi Naidoo and the Kaliuga Group collected the best Traditional and Cultural Indian award. KwaZulu-Natal Premier Dr. Zweli Mkhize says the Satmas help to bring about nation building.

“The Satma Awards are important because we find it as a very useful and unifying effort. To respect each other and to respect different cultures and to respect each other's music, and infact the strength of our country lies in the diverse community that respects each other's identity, culture and religion.”

Paul Ferus took home the Best Traditional and Cultural Boeremusiek award, Best praise singer went to Goqozile Masango, Ababekezeli won for Best Umbhaqanga Album and Best Traditional Dance group went to Dikwena Tse Botse Tsa Ga Matsepe. Best Community Radio Station DJ went to Inanda FM presenter Sabatha Shembe.
