Minor glitches have hampered the start of Census 2011. Posters of census takers in the area they will work have not been put up in some places. A last group of counters is also waiting to be deployed. Statistician-General Pali Lehohla says an extra group of 16 000 field-workers has had to be deployed. He says it will take a few days to have all the posters up and everything running.
The census began on Sunday night and will run until the end of the month. In line with the "Know your Enumerator" campaign, Statistics South Africa earlier promised to put up 2.8 million posters with the faces of the census-takers. This was to familiarise the residents with the person who will be coming to their homes to conduct the census.
Lehohla says some of the census-takers could not start their work, as they were still getting their ID cards, and still had to get their pictures taken for the posters. He added that there was no need to worry as there was a two-week mop-up period after October 31st.
The census began on Sunday night and will run until the end of the month. The results are expected in November next year.
