Poachers are succeeding where 50 million years of natural disasters failed: wiping out rhinos as a species. And with rhino horn now more expensive than gold, it’s no wonder the onslaught against this prehistoric animal has shifted to a new level where organised syndicates are using sophisticated equipment in their slaughtering.
At 7de Laan we’ve decided that it’s time to show a united front against this outrage. When they were approached, our actors did not hesitate for a moment before pledging their support to the Rhino DNA Project currently being developed at Onderstepoort.
With this project – which is supported by SANparks, the National Prosecuting Authority and the Green Hawks –a central record containing the DNA of every rhino is being created. This will, amongst other things, assist investigators to link horns to specific crime scenes, which will support the effective prosecution of offenders. Although a complete DNA sample costs around R1 680 per rhino, the initial tests and registration will be free of charge. The information will also be made available free of charge should it be required for the prosecution of poachers.
Our actors autographed canvas prints of photos by professional photographers like Martin Harvey and Patrick Barton. These canvases - as well as paintings by artists like Amanda Marais and Wouter du Preez, of which limited copies were made and also autographed by celebs – are being sold in aid of this project. The originals will be auctioned off at a later date to generate more funds.
This specific fundraising project was launched by Gustave Schoombee of Kinderdroomwerklikheid and the South African Hunters and Game Conservation Association’s Rhinos Alive initiative. Proceeds will be donated exclusively to the DNA project. With International Rhino Day celebrated worldwide on 22 September, there is no better time to pledge your support to the conservation of our natural heritage. I really like your new site! Congratulations SABC, how refreshing for a change! Why not advertise this on national TV? Of course Rhino's MUST be protected. a lot more must be done to make the users of Rhino horn aware that it's all in the mind and NOT the body. Come on guys write letters to your Ministers of Tourism and the Exterior. It's their job mainly to create this awareness with the Eastern Governments.
